Bucketlist project: backyard sauna + cold plunge
Many years ago I listened to a podcast episode with Tim Ferriss and Rick Rubin. It took place in a barrel sauna and they took breaks to jump in a cold plunge. The entire thing was great and I wrote down on actual paper “I will have a sauna and a cold plunge in my backyard someday.”
My wife and I recently got a place in Oakland and I was excited it had a sauna in the backyard. It was rough. So rough that as I broke it down to ‘use the good parts’, I ended up with an undersized concrete slab.
After pain, sweat, and cold coconuts, I made a sauna and a cold water plunge. The outside wood is almost entirely from an old deck we pulled apart. The cold plunge is a half buried wine barrel I got for free from a buddy at Two Mile Winery in Oakland.
The inside floor is sanded deck boards and the seating and walls is very sanded pine. Electric heater on the wall, lighting under the seats and oak leaves for post sauna beatings. Skål.
Mini project: mom’s getting a homemade something…
I like buying things, but I like making things even more. My favorite of all is making something and giving it away. This candle holder set was made for my candle loving mother in the basement workshop at their house in Illinois.
